Elon Musk is an popular engineer and a business magnet who is now working to revolutionize transport both on Earth and Space.

Ever wondered how a nerdy South African became the most iconic person of our generation? How many companies Elon Musk founded throughout his whole career till now?

He has founded many companies that wants to help the humanity some way or the other. Almost all his companies are successful and worth in Billions of Dollars.  Here’s a quick list of the companies that made average college graduate Elon Musk to ‘THE ELON MUSK’.

1.ZIP2

Musk launched his first company, Zip2 Corporation, in 1995 with his brother, Kimbal Musk. An online city guide, Zip2 was soon providing content for the new websites of both The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. In 1999, a division of Compaq Computer Corporation bought Zip2 for $307 million in cash and $34 million in stock options.

2. PAYPAL

In 1999, Elon and Kimbal Musk used the money from their sale of Zip2 to found X.com, an online financial services/payments company. An X.com acquisition the following year led to the creation of PayPal as it is known today.In October 2002, Musk earned his first billion when PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock. Before the sale, Musk owned 11 percent of PayPal stock.

3. SPACEX

Elon Musk founded his third company, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, in 2002 with the intention of building spacecraft for commercial space travel.

In March 2017, SpaceX saw the successful test flight and landing of a Falcon 9 rocket made from reusable parts, a development that opened the door for more affordable space travel.

In Year March 3,2021 SpaceX almost landed their first Starship which will take humanity to Mars.

Musk is the co-founder, CEO and product architect at Tesla Motors, a company formed in 2003 that is dedicated to producing affordable, mass-market electric cars as well as battery products. Tesla envisions a future of self-driving cars, where the majority of people travel by autonomous Tesla vehicles.

Now, Tesla has become not only the most valuable car company in the world but also more valuable than the next six automakers combined with a valuation of $631.29 billion at the time of writing.

Worldwide, that means Tesla is more valuable than Toyota, Volkswagen, Daimler, and General Motors, plus China-based BYD and NIO which are also publicly traded on the U.S. stock market

5.SOLARCITY

In August 2016, in Musk’s continuing effort to promote and advance sustainable energy and products for a wider consumer base, a $2.6 billion dollar deal was solidified to combine his electric car and solar energy companies.  

SolarCity has already started providing solar energy services to homeowners, businesses, government, and non-profit organizations in countries like Australia , New Zealand etc.

6.THE BORING COMPANY

 In January 2017, Musk launched The Boring Company, a company devoted to boring and building tunnels in order to reduce street traffic. He began with a test dig on the SpaceX property in Los Angeles. In May 2019 the company, now known as TBC, landed a $48.7 million contract from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to build an underground Loop system to shuttle people around the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The Boring Company also makes fun merchandise products like tshirts, flamethrower, Tesla tequila.

7. NEURALINK

 Neuralink Corporation is a neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk and others, developing implantable brain–machine interfaces (BMI). It is trying to develop ultra high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers.

8. OPENAI

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory consisting of the for-profit corporation  OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI LC. The company, considered a competitor to DeepMind, conducts research in the field of AI with the stated goal of promoting and developing friendly AI in a way that benefits humanity as a whole.

The organization was founded in San Francisco in late 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others, who collectively pledged US$1 billion. Musk resigned from the board in February 2018 but remained a donor. In 2019, OpenAI LP received a US$1 billion investment from Microsoft.

9. STARLINK

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation being constructed by SpaceX providing satellite Internet access. The constellation will consist of thousands of mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), working in combination with ground transceivers.

SpaceX plans to sell some of the satellites for military, scientific, or exploratory purposes. in the past two weeks.SpaceX’s Starlink internet has reached more than 10,000 users worldwide and started offering $99 preorders of the service to more countries and cities on a global scale.
