Odisha joins the 5G network, with Bhubaneswar and Cuttack among the first cities to receive services. On Thursday Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched 5G services in Bhubaneswar. According to Pradhan, 5G would significantly change the state of the nation. The next generation of mobile broadband will be available in two cities while reliance Jio focuses on extending it in other cities in the upcoming days.

“The charges for 5G services will not be high. There won’t be much difference in charges between 4G and 5G,”, said the Union communications minister, adding that the entire state of Odisha will be covered within two years.

According to the data, telecom companies, such as Reliance JIO, have already deployed towers around the state. A 5G experience lab has also been put up by JIO at SOA University. In addition, the government will establish technology parks through the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) to foster innovation among start-ups and students and to generate skilled workers. Establishing 100 telecom towers for rural places, Vaishanaw stated that 100 mobile towers will be set up in the state each month, bringing the overall number of towers in Odisha to 5,000, covering over 7,000 villages.

Concerning Odisha’s low teledensity, Ashwini Vaishnaw and Dharmendra Pradhan sactioned a Rs 5600 Crore package under which telecom towers will be put up in rural areas. Vaishnaw also utilized Rs 1080 crore to connect optical fiber cables in village area and inagurated 100 telecom towers in tribal region like Koraput, Kandhamal and Malkangiri districts.

By covering the cities like Rourkela, Berhampur, Puri, Sambalpur, and Balasore the Jio 5G network by February will expand rapidly across the state. According to a Jio spokesperson, the service will eventually reach all tehsils and talukas by December 2023.
